5 Things God Is Teaching Me Right Now

Michaelangelos-creation-of-Adam

I love to journal and even though I don’t do it every day I feel a sense of clarity, traction, and focus when I am coming to it consistently (3+ times per week). My journal is a mixture of Prayers, voices in my head, scriptures, responses, lyrics, random to do items, and things that God is speaking to me. If you don’t currently keep a journal, I would encourage you to give it a try. If you have kept one in the past (maybe it had a heart-shaped locket on the front), you should give it another shot. Just because it didn’t work in a previous season, it doesn’t mean it won’t stick in your current season.¬†Michael Hyatt just did a great podcast on this:¬†The 7 Benefits Of Keeping A Journal.

One of my favorite things to do is look back over the last few weeks or months of entries and remind myself of specific things God is speaking to me or teaching me in this season. I am always so thankful for how much it encourages me and centers my thinking on what matters. It brings perspective and refreshes my purpose. Recently I took a look back.

Here are 5 Things God Is Teaching Me Right Now

1. Keep watch.

Watch for opportunities, new perspectives, for red flags, for direction, for inspiration. Keep watch like a sailor in a ship’s crow’s nest. Be vigilant!

“I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me…”

Habakkuk 2:1

2. Stay close.

I have lived by this motto for the past decade of my life. Want to know God’s desire for us? Nearness to Him is always in His perfect will. It positions us in the best place to know and hear His voice, to sense His presence, and to respond to His leading.

“But as for me, how good it is to be near God.”

Psalm 73:28

3. Guard your heart.

It doesn’t matter how high climb if you reach the summit without your integrity in tact.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.”

Proverbs 4:23

4. Press on.

Keep seeking, digging, creating, and learning. No matter what you do, press on. In failure, press on. In disaster, press on. Keep your focus on the most important things and leave everything else in the dust.

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 3:14

5. For the love.

My wife and I were having a life-giving conversation the other night and she reminded me that whatever I do, that I should do it for the love of it. If love and passion fail to lead the way in our creating, then we must reassess whether or not we should continue without stopping to rest, change direction, or both.

“Three things will last forever–faith, hope, and love–and the greatest of these is love.”

1 Corinthians 13:13

I am genuinely interested to know. What is God teaching you right now as an artist or just life in general. Please share in the comments below.

Great list Aubrey. I often find that making a list like yours provides focus when I need it.

Speaking of focus, I am going through one of those periods right now where I am all over the place, particularly with work stuff. I am being pushed and pulled in every direction. To be honest, I am the one doing most of the pushing and pulling. Sure enough God came a knocking and left Kyle Idleman’s new book – Gods At War (www.godsatwar.com) on my ‘doorstep’. Looks like another teachable moment for me from Him!

Ben, thanks for the feedback. I am excited to check out your recommendation. The teachable moments from God are the most difficult and yet the most rewarding. Thank God that He loves us enough to challenge us.
